Image Selection









































Here are three different ideas we had for the main image on the poster, we tried 3 different compositions with the same idea. We wanted the villain to stand out by being the only character with her eyes open.

So far to edit our poster we have used Photoshop. This is a graphics editing program developed and published by Adobe systems. It is the current market leader for commercial bitmap and image manipulation software. It has been described as an industry standard for graphic professionals which is one of the reasons we have chosen this program to edit our poster image.

Whilst researching into film posters we have discovered that the most effective kind of poster contains a group of people as opposed to just one. We took our inspiration for ours from the poster Sorority Row which consists of a group of girls draped over one another. This is where we got the idea of having the characters of our film draping over the metal bars and the inspiration for the dead expressions on their faces, however having one character with a smug look on their face to add contrast and create enigma.

Out of the three we chose this image as we thought it was the best composition and gave the effect we intended. However after looking at our research into existing media we found that they all had black background whereas our image had a brick background. Therefore we only wanted the people and the metal bars in the foreground. This is where Photoshop came in, we were not confident users of Photoshop and so it took us some time to teach ourselves you remove the background and replace it with black. The images above show the process. Once we had removed the brick we thought that the image was too bright so we used Picasa to reduce the brightness and increase the shadows to give it an effect that fitted in with the horror genre.

This is our first basic design idea for our poster. We chose to have the main image central and the film title below it like seen in two of the posters we analysed in our research, Sorority Row and One Missed Call. We thought that the layout of these posters were more effective than the other two that we looked at. We also chose to have the tagline below the film title so as it does not draw attention away from the image and the title. We then took the common code and convention of film posters to present the names of the producers, directors and people involved in the making of the film at the bottom of the poster in a small font.

Here in our second design idea for our poster you can see that we chose to move the tagline to the top of the poster. We chose to do this because we looked back at our existing media that we analysed and found that the One Missed Call poster was composed in this way and we believed that out of the four this one looked the most effective for its purpose, it does not take the focus away from the title and image as it is in a small font. We also noted that in 3 of the 4 existing posters they had the release date displayed at the bottom ad we also received audience feedback saying that it would be more effective with a release date so we added this to follow the codes and conventions expected by our audience from a film poster.

Here we changed the background colour from white to black as we were advised by audience feedback to do so we also thought that black is more fitting to the genre. In the final piece this area will actually be an image but with a dark background colour so we wanted to see how much of an effect this change made to the overall look of the poster. We saw that the font colour had to be changed so as it could be seen, we chose to make the tagline and the release date red as this was seen in a number of the posters we analysed. Also red connotes blood and death and so it relates to the genre of our film as horror.

We have now got our image and so were able to add it to the poster. Audience feedback said that the poster was coming along well but now needed to start to take shape with the image and different fonts. We spent much time choosing our main image but came to the conclusion that this image was best suited and would be the most effective. We also added our film title to the poster in a horror style font which we selected from 4 possible fonts. As you can see in our research page for the poster we asked 45 people which font they thought would be best suited and this font came out on top.

We got a lot of positive feedback about our image, people liked the way that one character stands out but they aren't entirely sure why which they said would attract them to watch the film. We also added the tagline like we put in our plan because our audience were confused as to why there was no tagline. We chose the tagline 'BE CAREFUL WHO YOU TRUST' because we thought it was simple yet effective, it suggests that maybe the characters seen all trusted eachother but one of them betrayed the others.We also had positive feedback about the font so we kept the font but we decided to make the 'P' red so it stands out, we thought it gave it the effect of seeming like blood on a dagger.

One of our audience feedback said ''Don't film posters usually have directors names and stuff in small print at the bottom? maybe think about adding that'' . We had planned to add this in our initial planning but we decided to leave it until the end, we thought that the addition of this minor detail really had an impact and made it look professional. We also had feedback on our font where they said ''I like the red P it looks a bit like a dagger and reminds me of death and blood which links in with the genre of your film trailer'' . We were really pleased when we heard this because that is exactly the effect we had intended it to have on the audience. Audience feedback also said ''The addition of the 'coming soon' and the credits reinforces the fact its a film and gives it a professional edge'' which we agreed with. We chose to have the tagline, 'P' and 'Coming Soon' all in red to link to the horror genre and also to break it up a bit so the whole poster isn't black and white.

''I think the image is effective because it is clear that one character stands out from the others but it is still a mystery as to why. However it does not display the typical codes and conventions of a film poster, it is missing features such as a tagline. I think it is a good start but needs work on it.'' Rebecca Chatterton

''Really like the image, it really attracts me to the poster and the font looks amazing the shadowy bit makes it seem really secretive. However you need to add the tagline like you said in the plan'' Keisha Chan

'' It looks to me like this is supposed to be a horror film because of the dark background. The smirk on the girls face makes her stand out from the others, and the dead expressions on their faces make us think that she may be the killer. I think there should be something at the bottom telling us who produced it, as it it unclear who has made the film and whether any famous actors in it.'' Ed Maskell

''I like the simplicity, just the tagline and the name , shows that the film is well recognised , doesn't need an explanation. I like the fact that everyone is taken from the same picture, rather than seperate images edited together, brings a seriousness to the expressions on the faces and sets Holly's open eyes apart from the rest.''
